Using the Information Bet to Get the Feel of the Table

While playing poker one of the main factors that can determine whether you win or not and how much you win is the amount that you bet. How much you should bet on a particular hand is an art which can be perfected only after much practice. The amount that you should place as a bet would depend on the type of cards you have, how strong your opponents are, how many opponents are still there in the game etc.

An information bet can be used in a situation where you just want to get the feel of the table and want to understand your opponents, their reaction to cards, their strengths and weaknesses and if at all anyone has better cards than yours.

One of the best situations to use an information bet is when you have a hand that is medium strong like a low value pair with a strong kicker or a high value pair with a low kicker. In such situations it is best to use an information bet gauge the situation and understand if your opponents have a stronger hand.

Manipulate the pot

To avoid loosing out on a lot of money by placing large bets, it is best to put in a good amount of bet around one third of the pot. By doing this you would be able to study the reaction of your opponents to that bet amount and about their cards and this information alone can be extremely useful to plan out your next action steps.

To take an example if you are in a game with 3 opponents with a small blind and if the pot is $120, if you hold one top pair and a low kicker than you might want to place a bet of at least $40 just to see the reaction of your opponents. If your bet gets called then you would know that the opponents have really strong cards. Especially if you have been playing a tight game the opponents would not call on your bet with low value cards. In such a case it is best to drop out without loosing out on too much money. While putting in an information bet or even while making a bluff it is best to keep the pot small. It is always better to win small rather than loose big. It is advisable to not put a lot of chips at risk when the hand is not strong.
